101 Things – The Healing Power of Laughter

September 20, 2008  |  101 Things, Wasting Time

When I redid this site back in July, the deadline for my last 101 Things had passed and I had failed that one miserably. I went through a lot of changes in the time period of my last list so it definitely fell to the back burner. Plus, a lot of the tasks were impossible once we moved to Charleston since I created in while we still lived in Philadelphia.

So with a relaunch of the site, I redid the list. I’m always better at accomplishing set tasks and figured I needed something new to challenge myself with since life has sort of settled for us (kind of, but really, I always tend to take on too much regardless).

And unknowingly, I accomplished one of my tasks last week.

#53: Attend A Comedy Show

I had completely forgotten that I added this task to the list when our friends suggested it. It was just one of those things where we needed something to do on a Saturday night and they suggested checking out this Improv comedy show. Since we had never been to one and had an entire night to fill, we figured why not.

The show was put on by a troupe called The Have Nots! at Theatre 99 on Meeting Street, downtown. The theatre wasn’t difficult to find at all, as it is located above The Bicylce Shoppe and you just got around back to the stairs with the Christmas lights wrapped around them.

It cost $10 a person and they sold wine, beer, sodas and small snacks. The whole interior is painted in bright, funky colors with real abstract shapes and a offbeat local pieces thrown in here and there. The set is simple, but a piece in itself – it features our most prominent local landmark, The Ravenel Bridge with a Godzilla creature standing on top of it.

There were six cast members and they were HILARIOUS!! The set up for that Saturday night was a Diner theme. They gave you a list of sketches, categorized into section like Appetizers, Entrees, Sides, etc. with various choices, and the audience had to chose one from each section. We were then asked to provide certain details for them to run with, such as a theme, a place, a job. And then they were off – and man, I was laughing through most of the show because all of them were really good at improvising and making the sketches relevant to the stuff we had given them. And some of it was really random, like Ghostbusters, or ninjas.

The second part of the show (after about a ten minute intermission) started off a bit weak. In this part, they just asked for a word then proceeded to do various improv sketches relating to that word for the next half an hour or so. It struggled a bit but I think that was because they took the word “knitting”, since it was the first thing they heard (there were a bunch of drunk bitches there being all loud and “ooo, look at me” obnoxious). But they regained their footing and by the end of the show they were back to being hilarious again.

So overall, it was a good time. I highly recommend you go check them out if you’re in the area. They are definitely a good way to spend a weekend night, particularly if you’re up for a good laugh.

Sidenote

After the show, we went to T-Bonz, a local steakhouse and we saw Bill Murray sitting right at the door drinking a beer and just hanging out. He’s a regular around the Charleston area, as he’s part owner of our local baseball team and lives here part of the time, so most of my group was kind of blasé about it. But I had never been anywhere near a celebrity of that caliber so I was kind of enamored. I didn’t freak out and run over to him or try to take pictures, like others were doing. But I was a bit more excited because, well, that was Peter Venkman drinking a beer right near me!!

A rather cool ending to a very fun night!
